Cannabis Rules for Hamburg Airport and International Travel
Flying out of HAM? Catching a train to Denmark or the Netherlands from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof? Learn exactly how international and domestic borders interact with Germany's partial cannabis legalisation.
The Golden Rule for Travellers
"Domestic possession rules are not permission to import or export recreational cannabis."
Regardless of the 25g public limit within Germany, taking recreational cannabis across any international border—even within the Schengen Area—is a criminal smuggling offence. We do not provide evasion tactics or advice on bypassing customs.
Hamburg Airport (HAM)
Schengen & International Flights
It is strictly illegal to take recreational cannabis on any flight leaving Germany. Even if you are flying to another Schengen country like Spain or the Netherlands, the Schengen agreement does not legalise the cross-border transport of narcotics or recreational cannabis.
- Customs (Zoll) actively patrol Schengen terminals.
- Exporting cannabis is prosecuted as a criminal smuggling offence.
- Dispose of any remaining cannabis legally before entering the airport terminal.
Domestic Flights (Within Germany)
While the KCanG permits possession of up to 25g within Germany, flying with it domestically (e.g., Hamburg to Munich) is highly complex and not recommended.
- Airport security is overseen by the Federal Police (Bundespolizei).
- Finding cannabis during screening will likely trigger a police check to verify your age, identity, and the exact weight.
- Airlines hold independent house rules and can deny boarding if you carry substances they deem a safety or policy risk.
Hand Luggage vs. Checked Luggage
There is no "safe" luggage for international travel. Sniffer dogs and explosive/drug trace detectors are used on both checked and cabin baggage at Hamburg Airport. Do not pack cannabis in your suitcase assuming it will bypass screening.
Medical Cannabis Passengers
Hamburg Airport conseille aux voyageurs transportant des médicaments nécessaires pendant le voyage de conserver leur ordonnance ou un certificat médical et de vérifier les conditions auprès de la compagnie aérienne.
If you are a legitimate medical patient flying within the Schengen Area, you must carry a certified Article 75 Schengen certificate authenticated by your local health authority (Gesundheitsamt). A standard prescription or doctor's note is often insufficient for international border crossings.
Hamburg Hauptbahnhof & International Borders
Hamburg is a major European rail hub. Travelling internationally by train or car follows the exact same export laws as air travel.
International Trains
When departing from Hamburg Hbf on an ICE, EC, or Nightjet, you must respect the laws of the destination country, and you cannot export cannabis from Germany.
Denmark & The Nordics
Trains heading to Copenhagen face strict border checks. Danish authorities heavily penalise cannabis importation.
Netherlands
Travelling to Amsterdam? It remains illegal to carry cannabis across the German-Dutch border in either direction.
Poland, Austria, Switzerland, France
Whether heading east to Warsaw, south to Vienna/Zurich, or southwest to Paris, German Customs (Zoll) and Federal Police conduct random spot checks on cross-border trains specifically targeting narcotics.
Crossing Borders by Car
Driving out of Hamburg via the A7 towards Denmark (Flensburg) or the A1 towards the Netherlands means crossing federal borders.
-
Vehicle Searches Customs zones extend up to 30km inland from the actual border. Mobile search units (Schleierfahndung) operate heavily on autobahns leaving Hamburg.
-
Driving Under the Influence Aside from possession, if you are driving to the airport or border, the strict 3.5 ng/ml THC blood serum limit applies. Read the driving guide.
